    • John Lennons birthday today, Peace Tower to be lit, a letter from Yoko on IMAGINE ...

On 9 Oct 2008, John Lennon's birthday, Yoko Ono asks the people of Iceland (and the world)
to join her and many others across the rest of the world in praying for peace
      and stability.

At 8pm, (today in Iceland) as the IMAGINE PEACE TOWER is illuminated on the island of Viðey
she asks everyone to join together and let the power of light and prayer
become a collective expression of the desire for peace and harmony on our
      planet.

      Dear Friends,

Please join me not only in remembering John on October 9th but also in
spreading the message of peace. This is something that was so important to
John - the fact that we could all work together for the positive good of our
planet. He would have loved how we are all mobilizing ourselves in thought
and in action. It's time for action and the action is peace!

      with love, yoko

    • Signs of Change Screenings & Discussion

If you are in NYC this weekend, please check out rarely screened social movement films and videos as well as the Signs of Change exhibit on Saturday at Exit Art (it then closes down for a week). The screenings in Sun/Mon are at 16beaver.
Josh and Dara and maybe more Justseeds members will be there too. There will be snacks on Sunday/Monday, discussion, and hanging.
There are many films - so check out the descriptions here:
      http://www.16beavergroup.org/signsofchange.htm and
      http://www.exitart.org/site/pub/exhibition_programs/sig...

The Signs of Change Weekend of Screenings and Discussion brings together films and videos from the past 40 years that raise questions about what it means to participate in both cultural production and political action. The goal of the weekend is to provide a forum for sustained discussion of political documentary, its history, its uses, its aesthetics and politics. Taking as its focus the relation between moving images and social movements, we hope this weekend will prompt participants to think about the form and function of documentary images used in conjunction with left-wing movement building. Unlike a festival, each session is organized with equal emphasis on the screening and the discussion and analysis. Rather than have question and answer sessions with individual media makers after each screening, we have invited a number of mediamakers, scholars, and activists to engage with the issues and questions that the various programs raise in an effort to facilitate a discussion that will build over the course of this three day event. The weekend is open to all who are interested in the social use and impact of film and video and we hope that all who can will join us for films, food and excellent conversation.

    • North Beach Annual Art Walk and Open Studios OCT 25-26

North Beach Art Walk sponsered in part by ArtSpan and The Telegraph Hill Dwellers
      October 25 & 26, 11 am to 6 pm
Fivepoints Arthouse will be showcasing several works from local north beach resident artists, as well as work by our founders, Jason Bryan, Erik Parra, and Jessica Laurent. On Saturday, October 25, we will screen films from Telegraph Hill's own Judy Irving: ì19 Arrests, No Convictions,î is about a legendary Italian-American bar owner who redeems himself as a San Francisco Bay open-water swimmer, "escaping" from Alcatraz to the mainland; and a SNEAK PREVIEW of new sequences from the double-disc ìWild Parrotsî Collectorís Edition DVD, which will be released nationally Oct. 28th.
To help increase foot traffic in our neighborhood during the weekend of ArtSpan's Open Studios, and, to create an opportunity for more artists to participate, THD's Art & Culture Committee is organizing an art walk and inviting participation of all artists and merchants in North Beach.
Artists will be included on a map along with everybody participating in the Art Walk and/or the Open Studios. Regardless of whether you're planning to show your work/performance/poetry reading on the sidewalk, in your studio, or in a gallery, we would like to know about it and get you on our list of participating artists and merchants and have you on the map. At no cost to you, we will print this list and design a map and make it available to the public.
Businesses and storefront owners are lined up to showcase an artist's work or, lend their empty storefront window for that weekend.

This event is not limited to visual arts. If you're a poet, writer, or a musician, plan a reading or performance at any location in the hood and let us know.

For more information on how to get involved and to be included in the map please email historian@thd.org
